Link Between Extrasystole And Stress

Extrasystole, also called premature heartbeats, is one of the most common types of arrhythmia. It is defined by premature onset of one or two heart contractions. Extrasystole comes from outside the impulse-generating tissue located in the sinus node (the upper part of the wall of the right atrium of the heart) and spreads through the cardiac muscle in between the normal impulses, thereby causing premature ventricular contractions.

Extrasystole is not dangerous and may occur in absolutely healthy individuals. This heart rhythm disorder is diagnosed in 70% of patients, and is highly unlikely to bring any serious health problems to most of them. However, it can be a risk factor for patients with severe cardiovascular disorders, such as myocarditis, cardiomyopathy, valve defects and coronary heart disease.

If there is no organic cause, i.e. underlying heart problem, then your extrasystole is of functional cause. Functional extrasystoles can be diagnosed even during normal cardiac performance and may result from disturbances of the vegetative nervous system. They can be triggered by prolonged psychic tension, emotional distress, alcohol consumption, smoking or electrolyte disturbances.

Most often, functional extrasystole is due to stress or anxiety and resulting vascular response to the adrenaline rush. Adrenaline causes heart acceleration and considerable intensification of the heartbeat, as well as improvement of atrioventricular conductivity and increase of cardiac muscle automatism which can result in arrhythmias. Thus, ventricular extrasystole is mostly found in people under stress, specifically women over 60 with depression.

Arrhythmias caused by stress and adrenergic effect on the heart are typically transient and non-hazardous. However, it is necessary to see a doctor and have an ECG test to rule out serious heart problems and to confirm your extrasystole is no reason for concern.

Once you are sure your extrasystole is not a sign of any heart problem, you require the removal of trigger factors. Keep your stress levels low and make sure you do something you enjoy every now and then, like riding a bike in solitary places or watching a good comedy movie. If you are psychologically overstrained, you may be recommended nervine teas and sedatives. In case of important symptoms, the administration of specific antiarrhythmic medications and beta-blockers may be recommended.
